Present continuous

The present continuous tense is formed from the present tense of the verb be and the present participle (-ing form) of a verb.

We use the present continuous to talk about:

  • things that are happening at the moment of speaking:
    • The children are crying.
    • am walking to school.
  • things that happen before and after a given time:
    • At seven o’clock we are usually having dinner.
  • things that are temporary:
    • She will be living in New York for six months.
  • things that happen again and again:
    • They are always yelling.
    • She is always smiling.
  • things that have been arranged or planned:
    • am moving to a new house next week.
    • Liza is going to a new school next year.
